Difference between COVID-19 and Coronavirus

COVID-19 is the name given to a disease caused by a virus named CORONA.


Coronaviruses are a large group of viruses that may cause illness in animals or humans. In humans, several coronaviruses are known to cause respiratory infections that cause common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). COVID-19 is a spreading disease caused by this recently discovered "coronavirus".


COVID-19 stands for coronavirus disease of 2019. This infectious disease caused by the newly discovered coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. This new virus and the disease it caused were unknown before the outbreak began in Wuhan, China, in December 2019. COVID-19 is now a pandemic affecting many countries in the world.

When a person with COVID-19 breathe out or cough, they expel tiny droplets that contain the virus. These droplets can enter the mouth or nose of humans, causing an infection to occur.

The disease is most transferable when a person’s symptoms are at their peak. However, it is possible for a person without symptoms to spread the virus. A study suggests that 10% of infections are from people expressing no symptoms.

Droplets containing the virus can also land on nearby surfaces or objects. Other people can pick up the virus by touching these surfaces or objects and then touching their nose, eyes, or mouth without washing their hands.

About 80% of people recover from the disease without any hospital treatment. Around 1 out of every 5 people who get COVID-19 becomes seriously ill and have difficulty breathing. Older people, and those with having medical conditions like high blood pressure, heart and lung problems, diabetes, or cancer, are at higher risk of developing a serious illness.  .  People of all ages who have symptoms should seek medical attention immediately.
